Stationary exercise bikes are a great addition to any rehabilitation program, exercise room, commercial or home gym or workout facility. They are advantageous in workout routines for many reasons, but chiefly because they provide a very low impact, high caloric burn type of exercise that is easy to do in a relatively small space.

There are several different types of models of stationary exercise bikes that are perfect for both larger facilities as well as personal, home use. One of the most popular types of stationary exercise bikes on the market today is the spinning exercise bike. This bike can be used in gyms in spinning classes, or it can be used as a one user type of addition to a gym or home workout area. Spinning bikes are very durable and are designed for the rider to assume several different positions on the bike to enhance the whole body workout.

Spinning exercise bikes are built to be durable and tough, but they are also designed to be relatively low maintenance. They typically work on a flywheel type of mechanism with heavy metal tubing, safety straps on the pedals and dynamically designed seats for maximum comfort.

Generally all stationary exercise bikes will fall into two different styles or categories. These include the upright bikes and the recumbent bikes. Spinning exercise bikes are upright types of bikes, which look and feel like a traditional bike when you are riding. As the rider you are seated up and over the back wheel or wheel mount, with your body in an upright position. Your arms are extended forward over the front wheel to the handlebars.

Upright stationary exercise bikes typically have a wide variety of features that become increasingly more complex as you move up through the models. Most have several adjustments for tension on the wheels, providing more or less of a workout. Digital readouts on the console allow the rider to set the tension on the flywheel or gear mechanism with just the press of a button. In addition most newer models also provide information on your speed, calories burned and even programmable courses that change tension, just as you would experience riding over different types of terrain.

Recumbent bikes are the other general type of stationary exercise bikes. These bikes have the rider seated in a lower, more relaxed type of position. You will also typically be seated in a chair type seat, rather than on a traditional bicycle seat as seen in the upright models. Your legs extend forwards and your hands will either be positioned at your sides or slightly elevated from the shoulder. Recumbent stationary exercise bikes, like the upright models, have a variety of intensity levels and settings, plus they can also be adjusted to fit the rider with a simple lever mechanism.

Both types and styles of bikes include additional features such as magazine and book racks, water bottle holders and of course the LED displays of your progress. Some models have heart rate monitors and even jacks for headphones or music devices such as MP3 players.
